Meet Our Staff
The staff of Literacy Outreach for Madison County seek to match adult learners with strong tutors who can assist learners in achieving their literacy goals.

TARA TRUETT
Director & Literacy Coordinator – Oneida Area
Tara Truett has led Literacy Outreach for Madison County as Director for the past twelve years. She provides steady leadership and guides the overall direction of the program.
Tara oversees daily operations. Her responsibilities include grant writing, tutor training, and resource development across program sites.
A retired teacher and school administrator, Tara brings deep experience in education. She believes strongly in individualized learning. She is committed to meeting each learner where they are. She works to ensure the program remains welcoming, responsive, and effective.
In addition to her director role, Tara provides coordination for the Oneida area. This includes services offered through the public library and the Gorman Community Center.

JULIE BROWN
Literacy Coordinator – Cazenovia Area
Julie Brown has served as Literacy Coordinator through Cazenovia Public Library since October 2024. She supports the coordination and development of adult literacy services.
Her work includes English language learning, GED preparation, and access to video-based instruction. She focuses on building systems that support consistency and learner access.
Julie brings prior experience as a Family Peer Advocate and Educational Consultant. She worked with families across Onondaga and Cayuga Counties. This background informs her learner-centered approach. It also supports her focus on creating clear and supportive pathways for adults returning to education.

COURTNEY GUARNEIRI
Literacy Coordinator – Canastota Area
Courtney Guarnieri has served as a Literacy Coordinator with Literacy Outreach for Madison County since September 2025. She is based at the Canastota Library. She supports learners from the village and surrounding communities.
Courtney coordinates daily literacy services. Her responsibilities include learner intake, tutor support, scheduling, and instruction. She works primarily with young adults preparing for their GED.
Courtney brings more than twenty years of teaching and tutoring experience. She has a strong background in education. She believes progress is not linear. She values patience, persistence, and celebrating progress at every stage.

MELISSA A. NELSON
Literacy Coordinator – Chittenango / Bridgeport Area
Melissa Nelson has served as a Literacy Coordinator with Literacy Outreach for Madison County since November 2025. She is based at the Sullivan Free Libraries in Chittenango and Bridgeport. She supports learners across both communities.
Melissa works primarily with adults pursuing a GED, preparing for career or college pathways. She supports learners through goal setting and individualized instruction. She helps connect learners to materials that align with their learning styles.
Melissa began her career in teaching at the Defense Information School when she was an active duty Marine. Melissa brings a strong background in education. She is committed to helping learners overcome past barriers through encouragement and structured support.
